EaT YOURSELF BEAUTIFUL...

by Ginni Bogado

It's true what they say, ‘You are what you eat!' Such belief is now placed in this age old adage, that beauty industry is falling over itself to introduce a new type of product to the market, promoting 'beauty from within'. Welcome to the world of Nutri-Cosmetics. Heavily hyped and touted as the 'next big thing', we ask, what exactly are 'Nutri-Cosmetics', and what do they mean to the person on the street???
Of course, healthy eating is right in essence, but so much of our fruit and veg hits the shop floors well past its best, pumped full of chemicals that deplete their nutritional value. Hence the surge in ‘Nutri-Cosmetics’ - the power of the pill and the new found focus on internal well-being  has led the trend to feed the dermis from the inside and prolong the appearance of healthy, radiant skin.

Nude Skincare founder Chaki Miki, a naturopath who’s background includes a seven year stint in pioneering ‘organic’ store, Fresh and Wild, upholds a firm conviction that supplements can boost energy levels, improve health and provide genuine skin benefits. ‘Super critical’ and ‘dual fermentation’ processes mean higher potency and easy absorption of nutrients, which is why many of the supplements on the market do not work - they are made with synthetic material that the body struggles to digest. Nude offer the choice of four food supplements – ‘hydrate’, ‘detox’, ‘age defence’ and an ‘advanced multi-vitamin’ – all packed with probiotics and amino acids to purify, energise and hydrate any complexion. The proof really is ‘in the pudding’!

It didn’t take long for the big food conglomerates to jump on the bandwagon. Danone have developed dairy product ‘Essensis’ (yet to be released in the UK), and it too is preaching the ‘benefits from within’. ‘Essensis’ contains Borage Oils, which help reduce the risk of clogged pores and breakouts and contains a hefty dose of the well-publicised Omega 3 to promote a healthy metabolism and act as an antioxidant.

Coca-Cola have been one of the first mainstream commercial brands to recognise this trend, recently launching two new ‘enhanced’ products under the label Diet Coke Plus.
The first, 'Diet Coke Plus Vitamins', claims to have over 50% of your recommended daily allowance of vitamins C, B3 ,B12. The second,‘Diet Coke Plus Antioxidant’, comes fortified with Green Tea and Vitamin C. And as both are sugar-free, there’s hope for all the Coke addicts out there!

Essentially, Nutri-Cosmetics are a way of providing essential nutrients for the skin through internal digestion. Sounds such a basic old fashioned concept, but this is one trend that seems will become increasingly popular. While still in early stages, Nutri-Cosmetics will be popping up everywhere this year. At last, a real way to eat yourself beautiful!
