“I was inspired by the GFC [global financial crisis],” explains photographer Scala. “The thought that this year, with a lack of money, people will be forced to recycle and reuse. Be it their old clothing or what ever they find laying around. In this case we used black plastics mixed with fashion pieces.”
The duo shot on a beach in the sunny climes of Australia, where both creatives hail from. “I have always wanted to work with Michelle for as long as I can
remember,” Scala continues. “I thought this was the perfect project for us.”
“It was such nice timing too, being in the same place at the same time when we are nomadic as we are,” Jank expands, fresh from a five week dance residency with Aszure Barton in Santa Barbara, where she designed the costumes as part of another dance collaboration. “I just finished my fourth season selling pieces in Paris with Valery Demure too, so it’s been a busy time... But so inspiring.”
Scala is currently part of an exhibition at Gallery Libby in the Brompton Design District with forty portraits of farmers. “I shot that last summer in Holland with Dutch design studio Atelier NL,” he reveals. “My other recent projects include a story for German Mag TUSH and Dutch magazine Blend, along with a feature on James Long for an exciting new magazine called Mykro.”
It’s over to poetic soul Jank for the overriding memory of this editorial, however. “Whilst standing in the intense wind with the crew, a beautiful flock of birds flew past the shot,” she muses. “I love the idea of unexpected magic in life and that was one of those moments... That and trying to keep from flying off the ground clutching rubbish bags, of course. I’m more than a little obsessed with birds - I get called bird sometimes and I have two called Ella and DD. They’re a recurrent theme in my work, making me smile and bringing good energy.”
