If your a girl who shares the same feelings then you'll be disappointed to know that, for now at least, the duo behind the label (that's Sachiko Ocada and Aaron Sharif to you) are choosing to focus solely on their rags for boys (unless you are well in there with the Blaak clique or are lucky enough to be a private customer of course). And so back to the menswear, or more specifically, the A/W O8 collection. Love tartan? Take a look at the choice of mannish shaped plaid shirts on offer (hell, you could even go overboard and do a three piece by nabbing the matching trousers and jacket). Love a wide leg short cut with smart fabric? Then this collection will get you happy and if boxy biker jackets and a cameo from polka dot are welcome elements (its a little bit 90s street wear meets 90s Armani power suit) then you'll have a new look altogether and that's always good news.
First things first though, what made the duo decide to pull focus, close-up on menswear? ' The system and culture of fashion has changed so much from when we started' explains one-half Sachiko Ocada 'It didn’t seem right for us to carry on with the womenswear. We didn’t see the point in creating it so that others could benefit from our work, on a larger commercial scale'.
This might sound precious to some but there was a time when, alongside Preen, Blaak we're the most shit hot think on the LFW catwalks, so exclusivity and high fashion are the name of the game.
'Menswear has always been nice for us because its always been continual, we just did it' continues Ocada 'where as the womenswear was so reactionary. With our menswear we're still pleasantly appreciated and yet completely unknown and that filled are desire to make something new'. Nice then that the St.Martins graduates turned fash-faves are trying to streamline their clothing and keep it in the hands of the fans, after all the temptation for younger designers can be to sell out the minute that Topshop collaboration comes up (although some might not call that selling out) 'Menswear is a nice place to be at the moment. The wolves are still in the woods. We like to keep Blaak personal- we're selfish'.
